Back PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WATER DAMAGE

A burst pipe can wreak havoc in your home, but knowing how to shut off the water quickly can help to minimise the damage.

The first step is knowing where your emergency water shut off valve is. There should be a water meter box outside your property. Inside this is your shut-off tap which, when turned clockwise, will stop all water flowing into your pipes and into your house.

Ring your council if you can't find your meter box - they'll be able to help you over the phone. Once located, keep your meter box lid clear and easily accessible. Shutting off just the hot water supply is a simpler task. At the base of your hot water cylinder you'll see a lot of taps and valves. The tap nearest the cylinder will shut off the hot supply to your house - turn it clockwise. This will isolate the hot supply to your house only, allowing you to still use cold water.
